Abstract
Realists agree with anti-realists that much of reality is a social construction--money, marriage, government, language. But realists also believe there has to be a world that's independent of our representation of how things are. In contrast, anti-realists contend that reality always depends on how society conditions us. For example, if society sends strong messages about the inferiority of women or inequality among races, then these messages often become reality for the group that is demeaned.
