Abstract
People who report having had a religious experience often say that the encounter provides meaning and direction to their lives. It even gives proof of a Higher Being despite the fact that some may question the validity of the experience. In his book The Idea of the Holy Rudolf Otto says that the essential element of a religious experience is the awareness of something outside the self as holy and divine. He characterizes this awareness as one of awe and dread, something beyond our comprehension. The writings of 16th century Spanish mystic Saint Teresa and Taoist teacher Chuang Tse give voice to their experience.
