Abstract
Many believe that the actual origins of reported personal religious experiences are more human than divine. The brain is capable of lots of illusory and hallucinatory activity which undercuts any attempt to prove God through such experiences. For example, among temporal lobe epileptics is an interesting cluster of syndromes;one is hyper-religiosity. In experimental situations, even atheists stimulated magnetically in the temporal lobe experience the feeling of a great presence nearby. However, it is important to remember that most mystics are sane, intelligent, well-balanced people.
