Abstract
Rationalists believe in innate ideas, ideas that are present in the mind from birth. The concept had a long history beginning with Plato in the 4th century B.C.E. The difficulties and discoveries characteristic of Athens during this period are similar to scientific progress and conflict during the late 16th and early 17th centuries.
