Can we be certain our perceptions are backed up by an external world? Hume is skeptical. "Here experience is, and must be entirely silent." According to Hume we have no good reason for believing in the existence of an external world. We have to believe it because of the sorts of beings that we are, but it is not reason that justifies our belief. Some philosophers continue to be intrigued by this skepticism, but others strongly believe that we do have perceptual access to the real world and not just an internal representation of it.
