Abstract
In studying the way science has been conducted in different eras, Thomas Kuhn detects a striking pattern. Brief periods of revolution are set against a background of longer calmer periods which Kuhn calls "normal science." In a period of normal science, a community of scientists works within the confines of what Kuhn calls a "paradigm." When they come upon a problem that does not fit the paradigm, they set it aside. Gradually such problems mount and a period of revolutionary science begins in which everyone's attention is focused on solving the anomalies. Once that happens, a new paradigm is established, and normal science resumes.
