Abstract
One of the sharpest debates between the realist and instrumentalist views of science comes in relation to quantum mechanics, the theory of atomic and subatomic phenomena which led to breakthroughs in atomic energy, lasers, and electricity. When you go beyond the limits of observability it is difficult to know what to way about what is real and what is not. One group of physicists headed by Neils Bohr adopts an instrumental view known as the "Copenhagen interpretation," the belief that quantum mechanics does not give you a picture of the world but is a useful calculating tool, as the double slit experiment illustrates.
