Abstract
Construction of the Bakun Dam is part of a major power plant project deep in the rainforest of Borneo. Although over 30 villages must be evacuated, 10,000 people moved, and 150,000 acres of rainforest destroyed the government of Malaysia defends the project on the basis of the economic growth it will provide the entire nation. Opponents of the dam argue that the project will do irreparable harm to the environment. This balancing of costs against benefits has roots in an ethical theory called utilitarianism in which actions are judged in accordance with their consequences. As part of this examination of utilitarianism, this segment looks at the difference between qualitative and quantitative evaluations of utility, how problems of prediction and measure raise difficulties for utilitarianism, utilitarian theories that allow several kinds of intrinsic goods, and whether or not nature has intrinsic dignity or value.
