Abstract
"Can Rules Define Morality?" addresses Immanuel Kant's rights-based theories of ethics, the categorical imperative. What was new about Kant's moral philosophy is that a superhuman authority is not necessary to determine morality. Our own reason, he states, gives us the freedom to be autonomous and know the moral course of action by simply asking if we would be willing to have everyone do this. Treating everyone the same implies that everyone has equal worth or dignity to choose the purposes they will follow in their lives, the values they will adopt, and what they will do--a different form of the categorical imperative. His two versions of the categorical imperative are closely tied to the social ideals of the Enlightenment. Some have called Kant's notion of reasoning self who is independent a fiction; real selves are always shaped by social circumstances. Others doubt whether people considered moral are indeed acting from a sense of duty rather than the pursuit of happiness. Perhaps the most basic criticism has been his view that we should act only on principle regardless of circumstances.
