Abstract
Virtue ethics is criticized for failing to provide clear rules for action that would help people facing crises. It is not a theory about what people ought to do, but an inquiry into the kind of person we ought to be. Another criticism is that virtue ethics is relativistic;definitions of virtues vary from community to community. But perhaps the most daunting challenge that is posed is to ask how many people actually do develop character that causes them to act morally? One experiment to test the power of situations over moral character devised by Stanley Milgram suggests that, if representative, at least 60% of the population has weak character.
