Abstract
The liberal view that government must be neutral and allow individuals the right to choose their own values and ends is criticized by communitarians. Communitarians believe in the organic nature of the state and the importance of belonging to a community of people who share a culture and common set of values--another response to what justifies the state. Some communitarian ideas can be traced to the writings of Aristotle who believed that the state is not only created by the people, it educates citizens in the shared ideals of self rule, culture, and the common good.
