Abstract
Is there a Divine Plan that can give purpose and meaning to our lives? Hegel and Mark argued that meaning for individual lives comes from contributing to the progress of history, the arena in which humans come to the full realization of reason and freedom. At a time when many people have been deprived of traditional frameworks of meaning, 19th century Danish philosopher Soren Kierkegaard believed that each person must find his or her own truth and meaning in each of the three major stages of life: aesthetic, ethical and religious. Jean-Paul Sartre renounced God as a possible source of meaning in life and instead has man taking that position and making his own choices. Sartre's lifelong companion, philosopher Simone de Beauvoir, also rejected the idea of a Divine Plan, but to a greater extent focuses on people in the context of others. Women, she says are not allowed the individuality and choice that men enjoy. Perhaps the most striking feature of modern times is its speed. The challenge of creating meaning in an era of change requires us to pause and reflect, and to connect with our successors, the generations to come.
