Abstract
Philosopher Daniel Dennett credits the development of distal perception capacity with the human ability to understand the world--including those things that are beneficial and those that are not--and make plans accordingly. Professor Dennett states that whether someone is tracking food, the Dow Jones Industrial Average, the best ideas in molecular biology, or one's favorite poet, all mental activity can be viewed as a means by which to keep track of things in the world in order to better anticipate what's going to happen in the future.
