Abstract
Philosopher Hilary Putnam discusses problems with using any form of the brain in a vat argument for skeptical purposes. The biggest problem he cites is that the brain in a vat argument itself requires that many of our assumptions concerning the laws of nature and the world around us be correct. If they are, some would argue, how does it then make sense for this same argument to call into question our basic assumptions about the external world?
