Abstract
Philosopher Martha Nussbaum offers a critical analysis of classical utilitarian theory. On the positive side, she states that classical utilitarianism valued everyone equally, regardless of social class. However, in the opinion of Professor Nussbaum, utilitarianism in the 19th century had two serious flaws. In considering the total utility of everyone, it sometimes missed problems individuals might be experiencing. In much the same way, Professor Nussbaum notes, classical utilitarianism also combined all aspects of life into a single category or average, which meant there were times in which more specific, individual categories were overlooked.
