Abstract
Philosopher Martha Nussbaum talks about the split among the ancient Greeks between those, like Aristotle, who thought the body was an essential part of the self, and those like Plato, who believed that the body was merely "...a prison house for the soul." She explains that as a result of his views about the body, Plato didn't think very highly of those who worked with their bodies and not their intellects. For his part, Aristotle's focus on the body led to an emphasis on politics concerned with the distribution of material resources.
