Abstract
Philosopher Ian Hacking observes that rationalists were fascinated by the possibility of mathematical proof, while empiricists were not. He notes that there is an enormous difference to this day among philosophers about this same subject. For those who do believe in the validity of such proofs, there is also a belief that the human mind must be born with certain fundamental ideas, without which mathematical proofs and recognition of things in the world would not be possible.
