Abstract
Philosopher Stephen Toulmin talks about the challenge of defining philosophy. During the course of his remarks, Professor Toulmin mentions Ludwig Wittgenstein, with whom he studied in Cambridge. Wittgenstein used to say that the best way to understand tragedy is not by reading a definition of the word, but by reading several plays that are tragedies. In much the same way, Professor Toulmin suggests that the best way to understand philosophy is not by reading a definition of the word, but by being exposed to philosophical arguments, ideas and questions.
