Abstract
Ideals rather than common ancestry serve as the basis of the common identity Americans share. Many of these ideals--belief in the autonomy of the individual, limited government that depends on the consent of the governed, and the capacity to share in self rule--had their origins in ancient Greece and Rome. They were integral to the country's beginnings in the 18th century but incomplete and limited in the range of people and areas of life to which they applied.
