Abstract
The Framers of the Constitution excluded many people from active participation in the newly-created government, but the fact that the language of the Constitution they created was inclusive, provided the opening for excluded groups to be brought into the system. What is distinctive about the United States is the extraordinary diversity of its population. Less than 1% of the people who live in this country today can trace their ancestry to the Native Americans who originally inhabited these lands.
