Abstract
When a case does go to trial, the fate of the defendant rests with a jury of his or her peers. In the United States, the accused is entitled to legal counsel whether they can pay for it or not. The quality of defense, many experts believe, does improve if more assets are available. Money can also determine how much time a defendant spends in jail awaiting trial. The bail system, some believe, is fraught with abuse. Finally, the appeals process can reverse injustices that may have occurred during the course of the trial.
