Abstract
There have been times in U. S. history when third parties have affected the outcome of an election. If a third party takes disproportionately from one party rather than the other they can be divisive. Ironically, Ross Perot got 19% of the vote in 1992 and did not impact the presidential outcome. Ralph Nader got 2.7% in 2000 and made the difference. Historically the other function third parties have played is to bring issues into the spotlight that one or both of the major parties will choose to adopt.
