Abstract
There are two paths to public office, coming up through the party ranks or becoming an entrepreneur and raising campaign funds yourself. One of the most important assets in electoral politics is positive name recognition. This may come from a family background in politics and learning by observation. People who run for Congress are generally well educated, like interacting with people, and build an experience base in preparation for public office. Women now have an equal chance to run for office and win, but it wasn't always so as was the case of Ruth Hannah McCormick who ran for Congress in 1928.
