Abstract
A free press is essential to a democratic society. It alerts citizens to events that will affect their lives and provides a channel through which political leaders can reach the public. Congress received as much press attention as the President in the mid 20th century. In the 1960s and '70s a presidential address garnered a 70 to 80% audience share. Today the newscaster controls the message. Politicians strive to spotlight the message they think is important, but what journalists stress in a brief sound byte may not be what the officeholder or candidate had in mind.
