Abstract
Major political figures spend enormous amounts of time directing the attention of the press toward issues they consider important. This intense concern with "managing" the news makes the relationship with the press adversarial, however professionally it is handled. Jeffrey Birnbaum provides the perspective of a White House reporter and Mike McCurry the viewpoint of the presidential press secretary, with Tom Patterson presenting academic analysis of the relationship between the press and the president.
