Abstract
A president's opportunity to appoint someone to the Supreme Court extends his or her influence long past the presidential term. The selection of a nominee is primarily influenced by ideological compatibility, identity politics, and competence. On a more pragmatic level, a president looks for someone who can be confirmed by the Senate. Even George Washington did not get his way with every nominee. Today because the process is viewed on national television, the process is seen as more contentious.
