Abstract
Legal scholars are asked to comment on qualifications and characteristics they think are important for nominees to the federal bench. Douglas Kmiec favors nominees who are "learned in the law and...capable, based on experience and temperament and integrity, to give us a fair reading of the Constitution and the federal statutes." Jonathan Varat talks about the importance of open-mindedness and wisdom--the ability to listen, to consider everything, and then make a good judgment. Gender, ethnic, and racial diversity is desirable, they say, but secondary to integrity, intellectual ability, and temperament.
