Abstract
The word "activist," often used in reference to court decisions, can have quite different meanings. The Warren court, for example, departed in many ways from decisions of the past and was critical to the struggle for inclusion by communities of color. In the future, the tug of war between minority rights and majority rule, between states rights and federal power, between legislative and judicial authority will undoubtedly continue as this diverse nation struggles to maintain its set of values in a way that maintains both social stability and progress.
