Abstract
Workers began gaining a degree of power in the 1930s when Congress passed legislation that guaranteed their right to bargain collectively and established a minimum wage. In the decades that followed American workers continued to strengthen their position with relatively full employment and improved productivity. Concern about the high rate of immigration and the kinds of jobs newcomers fill is offset by the realization that the country may need this infusion of labor in the future as the baby boon generation leaves the workforce.
