BROOKLYN BRIDGE, opened for service in 1883 after thirteen years had been spent in its construction, was the first bridge to span the East River and connect Manhattan and Brooklyn, on Long Island. It cost $15,000,000, is more than a mile long (6000 feet) and towers 135 feet above the water line.
