Abstract
The defense of the United States from the end of World War II through the Cold War era was focused on clearly definable enemies. During the Cold War the two superpowers engaged in a frenzied arms race, attempting to offset any chance of nuclear war by maintaining the threat of mutual destruction. In December of 1962 an American spy plane flying a secret mission over Cuba discovered that Russia was attempting to install medium range missiles with nuclear warheads just 90 miles off the Florida coast. Graham Allison and others reconstruct the tense strategic interplay between the two superpowers in the days following this chilling discovery.
