Abstract
The defense capability of the United States, though aged, still reflects the prestige it had during the Cold War period with a defense budget larger than that of all other countries. The only two countries with some capability of operating intercontinentally are Britain and France. The U. S. military is not as large as it was during the Cold war, but it still retains responsibility for the same number of military tasks. Some of the aging equipment needs to be replaced, although at what cost and level of sophistication is debated. There is also the need to train and support other countries to do their own peace-keeping operations.
