Abstract
Former Secretary of Labor and university professor Robert Reich talks about what he calls "the unspoken social compact" between companies and their employees that used to assure increases in earnings and benefits for workers whose companies prospered. "That's gone, that old compact is gone," Secretary Reich observes. "The pressure on companies to show profits and to turn those profits into high share prices is enormous right now," he adds.
