Footage from the 1997 documentary “A Life Apart: Hasidism in America” (directed by Menachem Daum and Oren Rudavsky), the first in-depth documentary about Hasidic Jews, members of a distinctive group within Judaism that has roots in pre-World War II Eastern Europe.

00:00:20 - Hanukkah assembly: continuation of children singing Hebrew songs: "Sivivon sov sov" (Spinning top) and "Am Yisroel Chai" (The people of Israel lives) and other songs.

00:03:33 - A small boy is lifted up on the stage and leads the other children in a chant wishing long life to the Lubavitcher Rebbe, their teacher and the King, the Messiah. More singing. Portrait of the Rebbe on the wall. Children dancing to Hava Nagila.

00:11:24 - Men in Rabbi Berel Lazar's office. An elderly man speaks with him in Yiddish. Door of the office with stickers proclaiming the Lubavitcher Rebbe the Messiah. A couple enters and speaks with the rabbi in Russian. The woman shows him documents in Hebrew and Russian in connection with an inquiry from Israel about whether someone is a Jew or not.
