Abstract
Footage from the 1997 documentary “A Life Apart: Hasidism in America” (directed by Menachem Daum and Oren Rudavsky), the first in-depth documentary about Hasidic Jews, members of a distinctive group within Judaism that has roots in pre-World War II Eastern Europe.

A trip from Marina Roscha synagogue for services at the Moscow Choral Synagogue during Hanukkah. 12/9/1993.

00:15:17 - Hasidic men and boys in Marina Roscha synagogue. Interviews (in Russian). Hanukkah menorahs. Chabad Rabbi Berel Lazar (?) delivers a lesson about Hanukkah (in Russian.) Another man speaks in Hebrew about logiistics about getting on buses to go to a synagogue for a candle-lighting ceremony.

00:20:48 - Men from yeshiva and filmmakers on a bus. The passengers sing a nigun (traditional melody).

00:21:09 - (No audio) Men exit the bus at the Moscow Choral Synagogue and join others waiting on the stairs near the entrance. Other buses arrive. People entering the synagogue. Inside the synagogue. Elderly man with medals.


00:28:13 - Audio only. Wild sound. Clapping and singing. An argument in Russian and Hebrew. More singing.
