Abstract
Footage from the 1997 documentary “A Life Apart: Hasidism in America” (directed by Menachem Daum and Oren Rudavsky), the first in-depth documentary about Hasidic Jews, members of a distinctive group within Judaism that has roots in pre-World War II Eastern Europe.

00:03:58 - (Partial audio) Girls putting up Hanukkah decorations in Jewish school. Boys rehearsing a play or performance. Children file out of the room as directed by a woman speaking Hebrew. (Russian/Hebrew)

00:09:11 -Hanukkah assembly: Girls sitting in the "big room" in Jewish school. Interview of one girl who speaks a little English and then language of interview switches to Russian.

00:11:30 - Interview with girl continues.

00:13:37 - Hanukkah assembly: Girls and boys sing Hebrew songs to the accompaniment of an accordion: "David, melekh yisrael" (David, King of Israel) , "Hinei ma-tov" (Behold how pleasant).

00:16:24 - Hanukkah assembly: teacher or rabbi tells the children the story of Hanukkah. He lights the first candle of Hanukkah while explaining the proper way of carrying out the ritual. He recites the prayer for lighting the candles. (Russian/Hebrew)

00:20:41 - Kits with Hanukkah supplies are distributed to the children as they sing Hanukkah songs. The teacher or rabbi accompanies them on accordion.
