Abstract
Footage from the 1997 documentary “A Life Apart: Hasidism in America” (directed by Menachem Daum and Oren Rudavsky), the first in-depth documentary about Hasidic Jews, members of a distinctive group within Judaism that has roots in pre-World War II Eastern Europe.

00:00:12 - Men praying in Marina Roscha synagogue, including Rabbi Berel Lazar. Torah is taken out of the ark and unscrolled to get to that day's Torah portion, which is then chanted. The Torah is covered and returned to the ark.

00:20:17 - Interview with the bal-kriyah (prayer leader/Torah chanter). He is about to turn 80 years old. When he was a child he attended an illegal khaider (Jewish elementary school) shortly after the Russian Revolution. His family was pious and his father was learned and a bal-kriyah. Lived in Kremenchug (Ukraine) at one point. Illegal synagogues were usually just a room. About Jews in Moscow after World War II. (Yiddish)
