Abstract
Footage from the 1997 documentary “A Life Apart: Hasidism in America” (directed by Menachem Daum and Oren Rudavsky), the first in-depth documentary about Hasidic Jews, members of a distinctive group within Judaism that has roots in pre-World War II Eastern Europe.

Interview with mohel in English about his training to be a mohel and about how in Soviet times, circumcisions in Russia were performed clandestinely by old religious men assisted by Jewish surgeons. He was trained in US by American doctors. Why he became a Lubavitcher Hasid. Almost all work in Russia was by Chabad. Only in the last year have brises begun to be done on baby boys at eight days old. Nowadays also men/boys start their journey to becoming more Jewish with a bris.
