Abstract
Footage from the 1997 documentary “A Life Apart: Hasidism in America” (directed by Menachem Daum and Oren Rudavsky), the first in-depth documentary about Hasidic Jews, members of a distinctive group within Judaism that has roots in pre-World War II Eastern Europe.

Hanukkah menorah-lighting event in Moscow synchronized with the lighting of a menorah in Brooklyn via live satellite link, organized by Chabad. (Part 3) Interview with Rabbi Berel Lazar, Lubavitcher (Chabad) shaliach (emissary) in Russia (Part 1). 12/9/1993.


00:00:00 - (Mostly no audio) Boy with yarmulke speaks to the crowd in Russian. Shots of the screens with the live feeds from other countries. The control room. Camera speed off - battery apparently dying.

00:02:03 - (Partial audio) Crowds, screens with live feeds, menorah. Newscaster talking about NASA in English/man's voice translating into Russian.

00:03:54 - Faces in the crowd, including Chanie Lazar. Over sound system, presentation of event in Russian, with mention of the Lubavitcher Rebbe. (In Hebrew) the blessing for lighting Hanukkah candles. Crowd cheering.

00:06:29 - The menorah is lit. Boys' choir sings, Russian Army Band plays.

00:10:05 - Band continues to play. Young men and boys in the crowd sing about Moshiach (the messiah , the Lubavitcher Rebbe) and another song referencing the Rebbe. Chanie in crowd.

00:12:24 - (No audio) More shots of the crowd.

00:13:09 - Rabbi Berel Lazar tells the filmmakers that the satellite worked and the live feed made it through to New York. (English)

00:13:56 - (Partial audio) More shots of the crowd, the menorah, Rabbi Lazar, control room. Menorahs in a window.

00:17:25 - Interview with Rabbi Berel Lazar (English): On what it means to him to be a Hasid and about his devotion to the Rebbe. The difference between Lubavitcher and other Hasidim.
