Abstract
Footage from the 1997 documentary “A Life Apart: Hasidism in America” (directed by Menachem Daum and Oren Rudavsky), the first in-depth documentary about Hasidic Jews, members of a distinctive group within Judaism that has roots in pre-World War II Eastern Europe.

Hanukkah menorah-lighting event in Moscow synchronized with the lighting of a menorah in Brooklyn via live satellite link, organized by Chabad. (Part 2)
00:00:00 - Hanukkah candle-lighting ceremony on snowy night. Crowds gathering. Voice of woman broadcasting (Russian). 12/9/1993.

00:01:19 - (No audio) Boys' choir and boy with yarmulke at mike. Rabbi Lazar, Lubavitcher (Chabad) shaliach (emissary) in Russia and another rabbi up at top of the menorah lighting the shamos (central candle) and eventually other candles.

00:07:34 - (No audio) Crowd waving. Rabbi on gondola leading people in song. Dancing.

00:09:04 - Boys' choir singing and clapping to music of Russian Army Band.

00:10:01 - (Partial audio) People on the gondola silhouetted. Silhouette of Rabbi Berel Lazar screen as he is interviewed in English by Menachem Daum: "Everything in Russia is a miracle" and it was a miracle that this event took place.

00:12:01 - (Partial audio) Russian Army Band arriving in theater, shots of the menorah, the mitzvah mobile (vehicle for portable outreach). Rabbi Lazar in broadcast control van. Russian director gives instructions to crew in Russian and talks with New York crew in English and trying to send live feed.

00:16:44 - Rabbi Lazar outside with crew as problems with satellite continue. Sound system comes on. (Russian)

00:18:01 - (No audio) People exiting the theater. Faces of spectators.

00:19:10 - Screen broadcasting the event and spectators. Performers gathering at mike. Boy in yarmulke addresses the crowd in Russian.
