Footage from the 1997 documentary “A Life Apart: Hasidism in America” (directed by Menachem Daum and Oren Rudavsky), the first in-depth documentary about Hasidic Jews, members of a distinctive group within Judaism that has roots in pre-World War II Eastern Europe.

00:00:50 - Interview with Ben Zion Horowitz: About his first meeting with his future wife. Their shared goal that he would continue to study Talmud, become head of a yeshiva, or a printer of holy books. Engagement formalized and blessed by Bobover Rebbe.

00:07:13 - Celebrating engagement in yeshiva. Weekly phone calls with fiancee. Meeting with Bobover Rebbe on wedding day. The wedding. Dancing.

00:11:55 - Birth of first child. Father-in-law goes bankrupt. Invests money, loses it all. Becomes a teacher. Encouragement of Bobover Rebbe. Goes to NYU to become antiques appraiser. First days in college. Made commitment to continue to wear Hasidic garb which is very important in Hasidism. But now is no longer self-conscious.
