Abstract
Footage from the 1997 documentary “A Life Apart: Hasidism in America” (directed by Menachem Daum and Oren Rudavsky), the first in-depth documentary about Hasidic Jews, members of a distinctive group within Judaism that has roots in pre-World War II Eastern Europe.

Ba'al teshuvah: A Jew who becomes more religiously observant and/or becomes Hasidic.
Brukha: Blessing. Eretz Yisroel: Land of Israel.
Gemara: The part of the Talmud that contains commentaries on the Mishnah, the Oral Law.
Kollel: An institute for the fulltime study of Talmud for married men.
Maariv: Daily evening liturgy, also pronounced “Myrev.”
Mikvah: Ritual bath.
Minhah: Daily afternoon liturgy.
Minyan: The quorum of ten men required for communal worship in traditional Judaism.
