Abstract
Footage from the 1997 documentary “A Life Apart: Hasidism in America” (directed by Menachem Daum and Oren Rudavsky), the first in-depth documentary about Hasidic Jews, members of a distinctive group within Judaism that has roots in pre-World War II Eastern Europe.

00:02:15 - Moishe Gold comes home and lights the candles for Shabbos. He explains why he is lighting the candles early and why he is lighting so many candles. He explains that he will be taking his sons to the mikvah and explains what a mikvah is.
00:10:06 - Mr. Gold describes how the whole week is an anticipation of Shabbos.
00:11:10 - (Partial audio) Mr. Gold and sons leave for the mikvah and Chips cleans up a highchair. Little Yitzkhak's curlers are removed and he admires his curly peyos in the mirror. Family pictures. The Sabbath table.
00:14:36 - Mr. Gold puts on his bekishe and shtrayml. A phone call comes just as the family is about to light the Shabbos candles. A child asks for pennies for his pushke. Grandchildren arrive. Chips Gold explains that she thinks of all the members of her family when she lights the candles.
00:19:46 - Chips Gold lights the Shabbos candles and silently says the blessing. The family wishes each other a "good Shabbos." The candlesticks are moved from the dining table by Mr. Gold and his son while Mrs. Gold silently reads a psalm.
