Abstract
Footage from the 1997 documentary “A Life Apart: Hasidism in America” (directed by Menachem Daum and Oren Rudavsky), the first in-depth documentary about Hasidic Jews, members of a distinctive group within Judaism that has roots in pre-World War II Eastern Europe.

00:00:10 - Chips Gold wakes up her youngest son, Yitzchak and ritually washes his hands with him (the ritual of negelwasser) and wakes her son Chaim up, who also performs the ritual. Chips coaches the boys to say Modeh Ani. The older boy won't say it on camera.

00:04:49 - Chips dresses Yitzchak, putting on his tsitses and coaches him to say the blessing for putting on tsitses. Chaim says Modeh Ani silently.
