Abstract
Footage from the 1997 documentary “A Life Apart: Hasidism in America” (directed by Menachem Daum and Oren Rudavsky), the first in-depth documentary about Hasidic Jews, members of a distinctive group within Judaism that has roots in pre-World War II Eastern Europe.

00:00:02 - Gold boys ritually wash their hands before eating and say the requisite blessing. Chips Gold makes breakfast. Yeshia, as an older child, prays from a siddur (prayerbook). He also says a prayer before he eats.

00:06:12 - The children eat breakfast while a religious Jewish kid's song plays. A daughter joins the boys in the kitchen for breakfast and ritually washes her hands and explains the blessings she's said after washing and before eating. She explains that the boys go to the Belz yeshiva and that she goes to a Bais Yaakov school.

00:09:38 - Interview with Chips Gold: Is not sure if there is a difference between a Hasidic mother and other mothers who have large families. As a religious Jewish mother, she has a different job and role than her husband. The men's job is to learn, the woman's job is to raise the children. Has married off 4 children.

00:13:49 - Gold daughter silently says grace after she eats. Boys clear away the dishes. Chips explains that they don't have a light in their refrigerator to avoid accidentally triggering it to turn on when they open the refrigerator on Shabbos.

00:15:18 - Daughter leaves for school; boys wait for school bus. Interview with Chips: she will clean the house and then go to her job (teaching dance.)
