Abstract
Footage from the 1997 documentary “A Life Apart: Hasidism in America” (directed by Menachem Daum and Oren Rudavsky), the first in-depth documentary about Hasidic Jews, members of a distinctive group within Judaism that has roots in pre-World War II Eastern Europe.

00:00:15 - (Partial audio) Mr. Kaufman and others at the camp. Women praying. Filmmakers are counted into the minyan (the quorum of ten men required for communal worship in traditional Judaism) for minhah (praying the afternoon liturgy).

00:04:55 - (No audio) The camp at twilight. Hebrew signs. One is about how anyone who realizes that he is walking on a grave should make a charitable donation and say psalms. An eternal light. Russian sign. A bag with "kvitlakh," notes traditionally left at grave sites asking those who are buried there to intercede in heaven on behalf of the petitioner. Memorial candles. Women saying psalms and/or praying. Kaufman and others at a table.

00:11:28 - (Partial audio) Men davening shakhris (praying the morning liturgy). An elderly man sweeps and washes the floor. Books and tallis bags, tefillin.
