Abstract
Footage from the 1997 documentary “A Life Apart: Hasidism in America” (directed by Menachem Daum and Oren Rudavsky), the first in-depth documentary about Hasidic Jews, members of a distinctive group within Judaism that has roots in pre-World War II Eastern Europe.

Hasidim on a pilgrimage to the grave of the Vizhnitzer rebbe in the Jewish cemetery in Vizhnitz, Ukraine. (Part 1)

00:00:00 - (No audio) Outside the Jewish cemetery in Vizhnitz, Ukraine. Water for ritual handwashing. Entrance to the cemetery and gravestones. Caretaker sweeping. Hebrew sign. Rural village street scenes, including cows, horse-drawn wagon.

00:09:47 - (No audio) Hasidim praying in the cemetery.

00:11:02 - (No audio) More rural village street scenes outside the cemetery: horses, hay, children. A group of Hasidic men walk toward the cemetery. Police cars escort tour buses full of Hasidic men who then enter the cemetery.

00:18:58 - Men write notes with prayers to put on the graves of the sages buried there. One young boy among the men. Inside the ohel (monument built over the grave of a prominent person or rabbi) over the grave of the Vizhnitzer Rebbe.
