Gold family on Sukkot (2)
Abstract
Footage from the 1997 documentary “A Life Apart: Hasidism in America” (directed by Menachem Daum and Oren Rudavsky), the first in-depth documentary about Hasidic Jews, members of a distinctive group within Judaism that has roots in pre-World War II Eastern Europe.

The Gold family, Belzer Hasidim, at a meal in their Sukkah (hut erected for the holiday of Sukkot). (Part 2)

00:00:49 - Gold family at a meal in the sukkah. Moishe Gold tells a story about how the Belzer Rebbe personally spoke to his son on Yom Kippur. He takes a phone call from his son in Israel about attending the rebbe's tish (a gathering of disciples). He quotes Jewish sources (mostly in Hebrew) about means of drawing closer to God.

00:09:11 - Mr. Gold asks two of the littler children whether one is allowed to ride a camel on a festival day and discuss other prohibitions and permitted activities illustrated on one of the wall decoration. (One is supposed to sleep and eat under the open sky on Sukkot).

00:11:54 - Children given a ride in a shopping cart. Back in the sukkah, Mr. Gold says grace after the meal. He and his wife talk about their plans for the day. He supervises his children in saying the blessing over the lulav (palm branch) and esrog (citron) used in Sukkot holiday ritual. Chips also says the blessing over the lulav and esrog.

00:20:44 - (No audio) Mr. Gold supervises filmmaker Oren Rudavsky in saying the blessing over the lulav and esrog. Shots of interior of sukkah and decorations. Portrait of Belzer Rebbe.
