Footage from the 1997 documentary “A Life Apart: Hasidism in America” (directed by Menachem Daum and Oren Rudavsky), the first in-depth documentary about Hasidic Jews, members of a distinctive group within Judaism that has roots in pre-World War II Eastern Europe.

The principal, Mrs. Gottesman, goes goes over with them the blessings that are said over the challah and about the reason for reserving some of the dough of each challah as an offering to God. 00:02:25 - "Children, what blessings does one make over challah? Hamotzi.Why do we separate a piece from the dough? We save a piece for Hashem. And what do we do with the dough? We burn it. Really, in the time of the temple it was given to the priests. And that's what the family of the priests ate. Now we have no temple, so we burn it."

00:06:41 - (Partial audio) The girls take turns going through the steps of preparing the challah dough. They each make a contribution to the classroom pushke (charity box).
