Abstract
Footage from the 1997 documentary “A Life Apart: Hasidism in America” (directed by Menachem Daum and Oren Rudavsky), the first in-depth documentary about Hasidic Jews, members of a distinctive group within Judaism that has roots in pre-World War II Eastern Europe.

The Gold family, Belzer Hasidim, at a festive Purim meal. Purim is a holiday celebrated in commemoration of the deliverance of the Jews from the massacre plotted by Haman, when it is customary for children dress up in costumes. (Part 1)

00:00:29 - (Partial audio) Gold family: adults and children at the festive Purim table, washing before saying hamotsi (blessing) over challah, grandparents arrive, bringing sholekhmones (food baskets given as gifts on Purim). Children in costume. People begin the meal by eating challah. Gefilte fish is plated and brought out.

00:09:03 - Jack Gold asks for schnapps and he and his sons argue over whether the injunction to drink alcoholic beverages on Purim applies to scotch as well as wine. Wine and schnapps are drunk and toasts (L'hayim - To life)) are made. Men and boys sing a nigun (traditional melody).

00:13:25 - A granddaughter takes a group photograph of the family at table. The men and boys sing a Purim song. Jack Gold tells a story about enamel plates to illustrate that today people have a better standard of living than in the old days.

00:18:37 - Jack Gold with a kugel that one of his grandchildren has made for him. He explains that it is made from calves' feet.

00:20:49 - Chips Gold tells the filmmakers that Jack Gold is upset that they're not eating. More singing of nigunim.
